Back from Scotland & the Isle of Skye

This October, I embarked on a journey to Scotland, starting in Glasgow before venturing to the dramatic Isle of Skye. Led by my friends Hudson Henry and Rick LePage, our group of ten had more than ample room in the two large vans for both photographers and equipment.

Glasgow is a vibrant cultural hub with great pubs and very friendly Scots who, with a twinkle in their eye, invariably had humorous tales to tell. With a mixture of Victorian and modern architecture, Glasgow hosts world class museums, a vibrant music scene, and numerous galleries. I visited the magnificent cathedral, built between the 13th and 15th centuries, twice. The live organ concert brought me to tears.

On to the Scottish highlands. We passed through Ft. William (the header picture above) and Glencoe before settling in the village of Portree, Isle of Skye. The image below was the view from my hotel. The next image from Talisker Bay before sunset was a land before time. One can only imagine how rugged the Scots of old must have been with their clan warfare and skirmishes with the English in this darkly dramatic, harsh and beautiful land.

What was my favorite moment? Besides the camaraderie with my fellow photographers, the Coos stole my heart! These iconic Scottish cattle, with their shaggy russet coats and imposing horns, have occupied the highlands since the 6th century. Their gentle eyes peering through that thick fringe of hair, combined with their surprisingly docile nature makes for a magical encounter.
